About Maitland Art Center
The Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony in 1938 by American artist and architect André Smith (1880-1959). Today it houses some of the area's best works of art.
The tradition of artists as ambassadors continues at the center today with the Artists-in-Action program, art instruction for all ages, and community programs, including a Children's Art Festival.
The unique architecture of the buildings is art in itself, carved in part by the center's founder. The structures feature Mayan and Aztec designs with beautiful gardens and courtyards. The facilty is a popular place for weddings and events.
The center houses a number of permanent collections, and plays host to traveling art collections throughout the year. Guests can view art in progress as resident Artists-in-Action create their works in on-site studios throughout the year.
Classes: Kids and teen art classes include everything from pottery and clay sculpture to drawing, cartooning, watercolor, and jewelry making. Children's classes run for six weeks and are for kids ages six to 12. Teen classes run for nine weeks. Register early as classes frequently fill-up quickly.
Summer Camp: Summer art classes are also available at the center. Children attend three sessions three times per week. Instruction includes pottery, painting, mixed media, drawing/cartooning, clay sculpture, mosaic art, reverse painting on glass, and more.
