about Marine Science Institute:
Families can learn about the marine habitats that surround the Peninsula through classes and activities at the Marine Science Institute. In addition to providing extensive school programs, the Marine Science Institute offers educational opportunities to the general public through its Discovery Voyages, nature walks, and camps.
The Discovery Voyages, aboard the 90-foot research vessel, the Robert G. Brownlee, give children an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities examining fish, plankton, invertebrates and the oceanography of the Bay.
The Nature Walks focus on local marine ecology at locales such as Bair Island and the tidepools at Pillar Point on the Pacific coast.
Check the website for program offerings and prices. You'll have to call or email the Institute to reserve a place in a particular program.
Parties: Three types of birthday parties can be held through MSI for children ages four and older. The Shoreside Program allows participants to explore the San Francisco Bay. The second party, Rocky Shores Birthday Party, lets groups gain a hands-on look at animals that live in the tidepools. Fish & Sharks Birthday Party is an opportunity for participants to get a close look at the fish and sharks that inhabit the San Francisco Bay.
tips:
Check out the Stanford sailing center's boats next door to MSI and the salt production across the road. Make sure to bring sunscreen, hats and sweatshirts as there is often a glare from the water and field trips to the Pacific coast can surprise you with much chillier weather.
