The Boston Public Transportation System is amazingly easy to use.
MBTA service includes 4 subway lines, 13 commuter rail lines, 5 boat routes, and 170 bus routes servicing approximately 1,038 square miles. Service is provided to the 78 cities and towns which comprise the MBTA's district, and another 52 communities in eastern Massachusetts, with over 1.1 million riders each day.
The MBTA uses the CharlieTicket and the CharlieCard for fares. The CharlieTicket is a magnetically encoded ticket that contains either stored value or a T pass. A stored value CharlieTicket has the fare deducted from it each time you ride the T, allowing you to pay as you go on the subway and bus. The CharlieCard can be reused over time and allows you to add stored value and passes to your cards at vending machines, fare boxes, MBTA ticket offices, and on-line.
Monthly passes allow for unlimited travel on all MBTA services, have built in discounts and benefits (such as reduced auto insurance rates), and, on Sundays, a friend can ride for free. Passes can be bought at any station, or online at the website above.
