The MTS is the umbrella agency for most public transit in the San Diego area. It coordinates San Diego Transit and the San Diego Transit System. The agency is responsible for the operation of San Diego buses, the San Diego Trolley, the North County Transit District and the
Coaster, the Chula Vista Transit, and National City Transit. This consolidation ensures that fares are similar throughout the system, or at least that validated tickets are recognized for transfers. Comprehensive regional transit information is available by phone or on the web. System-wide maps can be obtained at
The Transit Store in Downtown San Diego, at the corner of First and Broadway Streets. A good rule of thumb for public transportation in San Diego is that if you are staying in or near Downtown San Diego/Balboa Park/Old Town or the beach communities of Pacific Beach, Pt. Loma or La Jolla, you can probably get away without having a car as long as you have time to spare getting around. If you plan to venture to North County or inland, or if you mind waiting or having to transfer, then by all means, get a car.
Good Deals and Freebies: Special ticket deals are available at trolley stations or The Transit Store. These include Day Trippers, good for unlimited riding throughout San Diego for one to four days ($5-$15). In addition,
children under five always ride for free, and up to two
children under 18 can ride for free on weekends as long as they are accompanied by a paying passenger.
