about Miami City Ballet:

Miami City Ballet is among the largest ballet companies in the United States with 48 dancers and seasons in four Florida counties.

The Ballet performs annually in Miami-Dade at the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts, in Broward at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, in Palm Beach at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and at the Naples Philharmonic Center in Collier County in Southwest Florida. Programs range from classical selections to work by leading contemporary choreagraphers and groundbreaking new work by emerging artists.

In addition to being one of Florida's premier performing arts institutions, Miami City Ballet - winner of our 2009 Parents' Picks award for best local dance class - also runs a leading school for fostering new talent in classical dance. Classes take place after school on weekdays or on Saturdays, depending on level and placement.

Founded in January 1993, the Miami City Ballet School was established in the manner and style of Edward Villella who trained at the School of American Ballet in New York. Villella brought to South Florida not only his experience in the traditions of his own training, but also his experiences as a performer at the New York City Ballet and as a teacher throughout the country. The regimen and discipline within which he developed are principles on which the school is based.

The curriculum is based on the dynamic evolution of classical dance as it enters the 21st century and beyond. The teachers and staff are dedicated to providing complete preparation for the demands of a professional career including technique, role characterization, presentation, and the various elements of staging. Students are expected to approach the training with a professional effort, whether or not they are planning a career in the field.

Children must by at least five years old by September 1 to enroll in classes. Students 8 years and over must attend a placement class for admission.
