The white Georgia marble, St. Cloud granite, and gleaming gold-leafed
Quadriga statuary atop this
hundred-year-old government building are pretty imposing, but be assured visitors are quite welcome within its historic walls.
Once inside, visitors are likely to find the architecture, art, and exhibits - and sometimes the legislators - accessible. One
free brochure is available to aid in self-guided exploration of the chambers and awe-inspiring rotunda; interesting
Art Treasures Hunt and
Capitol Mall Walking Tour brochures cost $2 each. To truly appreciate the symbolism and history in the building's details, join one of the
free 45-minute guided tours offered on the hour daily; the last begins one hour before closing. Groups of ten or more need to register at least two weeks in advance. Weather permitting, the
tours head out on the roof for a close-up view of the
Quadriga.
Visitors may dine in the restored
Rathskeller Cafeteria on the bottom floor. Tunnels on that level connect the Capitol with nearby government offices.
