This bit of futuristic optimism, left over from the 1962 World's Fair, still moves a lot of folks - 2.5 million, to be exact - between the Seattle Center and the Westlake Center Mall in the heart of downtown. The Monorail remains the quickest way to travel between downtown and the Seattle Center; the one-mile route takes two quiet minutes.
Trains leave every 10 minutes. This is a convenient way of reaching downtown without paying exorbitant parking prices; parking lot rates around the Seattle Center are much lower. And kids love to stand in the front of the train and watch the city zip by from the bubble-like front windows.
tips:
Go green and avoid traffic during Folklife, Bite of Seattle, Bumbershoot, and Sonics home games by riding the Monorail to the Seattle Center. Check the website for an accelerated departure schedule during major events.
getting there:
At the Seattle Center, the Monorail is located east of the Center House. Look for directional signs in the southeast corner of the building, or walk into the Fun Forest east of the Center House and look for the ramp. At Westlake Center Mall on Fifth Avenue and Pine Street, go up to the third level, and turn left at the escalators.
