in Minneapolis, MNabout MSP International Airport:
The main airport serving the Twin Cities comprises two terminals: Lindbergh Terminal, the main entry and departure point for most commercial flights, with its gates divided between Concourses A to G; and Humphrey Terminal, a much smaller facility serving charter and scheduled airlines, with ten gates. The terminals are located about 10 miles south of downtown Minneapolis, and southwest of downtown St. Paul; barring unforeseen delays and heavy traffic, it should take less than a half hour to get there by car from either downtown area. After passing through security at Lindbergh, travellers spill out into Northstar Crossing, an avenue featuring more than 100 shops, newstands, restaurants, and a food court. Stock up on travel-sized toys at a small Creative Kidstuff store, or pick up snacks for the flight. A family restroom is located at the Concourse A-E end of the avenue, providing a private refuge for nursing and diaper changing. All in all, there are worse places for families to be stranded if flights are delayed. With the convenient Hiawatha Light Rail Line, it is even possible to decamp for the nearby Mall of America or downtown Minneapolis, even if there are only a few hours to kill between flights - just be sure to leave enough time to get back through security upon return to the airport. Free light rail service is also available between the two terminals at the airport, and a tram speeds passengers along the concourses. For passing time on-site - and getting those wigglies out before a long flight - both terminals are equipped with travel-themed children's areas providing lots of opportunities for imaginative play. They feature mock airplanes and air traffic control towers, with attractive murals and sections for climbing. The play area in Lindbergh is located on Concourse C opposite Gate C11; in Humphrey, it's on the second floor, opposite gate H6. The play areas are free, but not enclosed, and at busy times (say, around holidays or during widespread weather delays), they can be crowded and a little chaotic. Pre-9/11, parents could bring kids over to the airport to watch takeoffs and landings from the comfort of the terminal, but that's no longer possible. Ticketed passengers, however, can still enjoy the observation deck on Concourse D at Lindbergh, with its bird's-eye view of the airfield, and the Minneapolis skyline behind. Parking: Generally, on-site parking is cheaper at Humphrey, even for Lindbergh flights; if visitors use the "e-park" system and swipe a credit card upon entering the lot, the day rate can be as low as $12. At the other end of the spectrum, full-service valet parking at Lindbergh runs $28-40/day, depending on the season. Cars parked overnight can be washed for an additional $6. Park'n Go is one option for off-site parking. Its shuttle buses meet you at your car, and drivers help load your bags onto the bus and drop you at the appropriate check-in door. With AAA membership, the rate can be as low as $9.50/day. Super Shuttle and taxi services are also available.
tips:
A small sign on the right on the approach to the Lindbergh Terminal indicates the turn-off to take to reach the large, full-service 24-hour airport post office. It's particularly handy to know about come April 15 (for those who don't file their taxes online), but useful other days as well!
getting there:
Bounded on the north and south by Highways 62 and 494, and to the west and east by Highways 77 and 5.
