About Muni

San Francisco's Municipal Railway is the seventh largest public transportation system in the country as measured by ridership, approximately 700,000 a day. The system includes a fleet of streetcars, trolley buses, diesel buses, cable cars, and rail cars (BART). It is easily the cheapest way to get around town because you don't have to pay for parking. Nonetheless, San Francisco continues to be a car-dependent city. Muni's record for reliability is spotty, and the route doesn't extend everywhere. Crowded public transportation can also be a trial when you're hauling kids and kid-related paraphernalia. The city appears to be working hard to improve service and as local traffic and its attendant headaches continue to build, public transportation will more likely be seen as a practical alternative. Muni Passport: A passport, created with the tourist in mind, enables you to ride Muni buses, streetcars, and cable cars as many times a day as you wish. Passports are available for one day ($11), three days ($18), or seven days ($24). Note that the three- and seven-day Passports are good for three or seven consecutive days. Another advantage of the Passport is that it's good for discounts at many visitor attractions in San Francisco, including the museums in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Zoo, and locations in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Passports are sold from 7:45am to 5pm on weekdays at the information booths in the baggage claim areas at the San Francisco International Airport and at the Visitor's Center. One-day Muni passes are sold by the conductors on the cable cars. The conductors can make change for up to $20. For more information on Muni Passports, call Muni's Revenue Department at 415.923.6050 or -6051. Fast Passes: Designed with commuters in mind. One of these tickets gains you access to all Muni transportation for $45 a month. Call 415.673.6864 to find out the locations of Fast Pass outlets.
