About Musee Mecanique
Musee Mecanique is a fascinating museum brimming with coin-operated old carnival attractions, such as marionettes, player pianos, and a scary mechanical laughing lady called Laughing Sal. A well-designed kiosk highlights parts of San Francisco's colorful history, including accounts of the amusement parks that once straddled Haight Street and Fillmore Street. Don't miss the miniature amusement park built out of toothpicks by San Quentin inmates.
Tips
There's a change machine for $1 and $5 bills. Every slot machine takes quarters only.
Getting There
It's at the corner of Taylor and the Embarcadero

- My toddler loved the dancing marionettes and the player pianos. My husband loved finding a Robotron game and getting the high score. I loved seeing them both thoroughly entertained. What a wonderful little museum.

[Submitted by Holly4/24/08 - if you remember the Cliff House then you can relate. Even before PlayStation the arcade was lots of fun. Put in your quarters and go back to the good old days.

[Submitted by Seal Rocker - I always enjoyed looking at these neat machines (when they were over at the Cliff House). My grandfather (along with his brother & their wives) made the Santa's Workshop piece. My brothers and I are disappointed that they just slapped on a quarter device and we'd like the opportunity to work on it to restore it (for free) and even include a photo of the builders standing in front of it (and maybe a history). I'm so glad they are keeping these old things going!
