The Museum of the American Railroad (previously known as the Age of Steam Railroad Museum) possesses a comprehensive collection of railway cars including a World War II passenger train, a railway post office and baggage car, Pullman sleeping cars, and a dining car.

More than thirty pieces of historic railroad equipment fill the museum including steam, diesel and electric locomotives, cabooses, historic structures, and signals. The museum also features a steam calliope and whistle display.

Train-obsessed kids can celebrate birthdays at the museum. Birthday party packages include admission to the museum for 20 guests during the day of the event, gift bags with a paper engineer hat and plastic train whistle for each guest, and an outdoor picnic table for use during the party. Cake and coolers with drinks and food may be brought to the event although no food is allowed on the equipment. Party packages are $100.

The museum is closed Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Eve and Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. The museum is open daily during the State Fair of Texas.
