Trains, planes, and automobiles, indeed. More than
seventy real locomotives are housed on the 150 acres of the
Museum of Transportation; they're joined by planes, vintage cars, trolleys, and a river boat perched on dry land.
Many of the locomotives can be boarded to see the inner workings up-close. Make sure to catch a ride on the fully operational
miniature train or the 1947 Philadelphia streetcar (both run on weekends).
Kids love
Creation Station, a hands-on room chock full of toys and building sets related to transportation. It costs an extra $1.50 admission. Check the
website for monthly themes and times the event is held.
The grounds are a great place to hold a
birthday party. Younger children head to Creation Station; older kids get a pirate-themed party during which they participate in a treasure hunt around the grounds. Prices for the 90-minute parties include invitations and thank you notes, snack lunch, and goodie bags.
