Lewis and Clark buffs, or anyone interested in the impressive role that St. Louis played in fostering the westward development of the United States will appreciate the
Museum of Westward Expansion, located at the
Gateway Arch Riverfront, underneath the
Gateway Arch. As visitors browse the exhibits, they learn about the history of the 19th century American West, from the Louisiana Purchase to the closing of the frontier in 1890.
The museum has several good collections of
Native American artifacts, as well as many from pioneer travelers. Kids are particularly fascinated by the animatronic figures that "explain" facets of the region's history to visitors.
