The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Day Camp for Big Kids in the Boise area, the Nampa Recreation Center is a 140,000 square foot facility that houses five indoor pools (including a kids' pool), two basketball courts, a weight room, a weight and fitness room for youths ages 10 to 14, exercise studios (children ages 12 to 14 can attend group exercise classes when accompanied by a parent), five racquetball courts, a rock climbing wall, and an indoor track. A paved trail encircles the grounds of the Nampa Recreation Center. The trail is available for public use free of charge, and can be used for walking, roller skating, biking, walking a dog, etc. Many classes and lessons are offered at the rec center, including swimming, rock climbing, cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, basketball, martial arts, Short Sports (sport programs for ages three to eight), art education, babysitter training, and more. See the website for registration information. The Kids in Action Day Camp is a program for children in grades K-6. It offers hands-on activities for the children during the before- and afterschool hours. All-day camps are available during the Nampa School District's scheduled days off. Transportation to and from local schools is provided for the participants. Tots ages five and under can play in the facility's Play Center (daycare) while mom/dad fit in a work out. The Play Center is open Mon-Sat; see the website for hours and pricing. Parents must remain in the recreation center while their children are in the daycare. The center offers preschool classes for three and four year olds, as well as a preschool readiness class. Participants must be fully toilet trained. Kids can celebrate their birthday at the rec center. Birthday party packages include the use of a private party room, a personalized birthday banner, a balloon bouquet, and a discounted rate for the use of the NRC facilities.
