Buried in the basement of the Commerce building,
The National Aquarium - located just one block from the
Washington Monument - is perfect for small first-timers. It also has the value of being small, which means a short visit will take you through the whole experience - perfect for little ones.
Feedings are fun to watch - especially the alligators who, since they eat only once a week, really go for the gusto (or gutso - sensitive kids might find this tableau overwhelming). Sharks and piranhas eat their fill on a fluctuating schedule; you'll find something being fed, or a keeper presentation, most days at 2pm.
Sponsor an animal for a small "adoption" fee at the
Aquarium. Proceeds from Aquadopt go to the
National Aquarium Society and help to maintain the facility. Sponsorship levels are available from $50 to $100.
Children's birthday parties, for kids ages four to 12, can be scheduled at a fee of $300, which includes admission for up to 30 people (anyone two and older). The fee also includes rental of the party room with tables and chairs. Decorations, food, and drinks are not provided, but may be brought in by the hosts. Note: All food and drinks must remain in the party room at all times and are not allowed in the main gallery of the aquarium. For an extra $4 per child, goody bags will be provided, as well as a special surprise for the birthday child. Parties may be scheduled on any non-holiday weekday or weekend from either 10am-12:30pm or from 1:30pm-4pm, and should be booked two weeks in advance to secure rental space.
The
Aquarium also has a nice little
gift shop, filled with lots of fun (and educational) toys and books.
