The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is an unusually tranquil space in the midst of an otherwise developed city - and city-dwellers apparently appreciate the land as much as other creatures. Shaker residents preserved this space as a park back in the 1960s, when they were alarmed that a proposed freeway that could essentially dissect their neighborhood. Fortunately, we now have The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes to enjoy instead.

Several miles of hiking trails snake through the park; the 1/3-mile All People's Trail allows people of all physical abilities to experience the sights and sounds of the natural world.

Outdoor Adventure classes are held year-round (both indoors and out) for kids ages 2 1/2 to 10 years old.

Parties: Birthdays don't come more natural than this: one optional party program has kids create a "cake" (not edible for humans), which they leave for the animals to enjoy outside. Other parties options are available for up to 12 kids; prices start at $135.
