The
New York Botanical Garden makes the extra effort to get city kids interested in flora and fauna. Families can delve into the mysteries of the plant kingdom at the
Everett Children's Adventure Garden and the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, where you're allowed (actually, encouraged!) to play in the dirt.
The Garden offers a slew of seasonal activities just right for little green thumbs, from daily hands-on activities to the Children's Gardening Program to the annual Holiday Train Show.
Narrated tram tours offer highlights of the gardens, collections, and grounds, every 20 minutes year-round. Seven stops along the way allow passengers to explore areas of interest before reboarding.
Lunch and snacks are available in the Garden Cafe, year-round; The Leon Levy Visitor Center Cafe serves salads, sandwiches, pastries, and snacks. Picnic tables are located near the Everett Children's Adventure Garden.
Family Membership is $120/year (100% tax deductible) and covers two adults and children under age 16.
NYBG birthday parties, recommended for children ages three to eight, are open to
NYBG Members and include a party coordinator, a dedicated
NYBG instructor and all program materials, a gingerbread house or scented ornament activity, pizza from one of Arthur Avenue's famous pizzerias, beverages, paper goods, and admission to special exhibitions. The cost for 10 children and 10 adults is $650. Add-ons are available for an additional fee. Contact the Garden for further
party information and reservations.
Fresh produce, flowers, and other items are available at the
New York Botanical Garden Farmers' Market on Wednesdays from 10am to 3pm, rain or shine, inside the Garden At Mosholu Gate on Kazimiroff Blvd.
