New York City Explorers, the winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Indoor Playspace/Partyspace for Big Kids in Brooklyn, offers an interesting alternative to babysitters, transforming childcare from long boring nights sitting in front of television into outward-bound days and evenings that allow children to actively explore city in which they live.

The Atlantic Avenue location covers 2400 square feet at street level, and houses a bright and comfy parents' lounge; a large, clean, and airy indoor play area with safe wooden toys and games; and an outpost of the hip indoor children's boutique, Corduroy Kid. The space is "green-cleaned" daily to keep germs at bay.

The Underhill Avenue location shares its space with Blue Marble Ice Cream.

Programming includes classes in the arts and academics for children from newborns to age 12; drop-off childcare services (including Sleep-in Saturdays, Movie Date Night, and Drop and Brunch); Citywide Bag-of-Tricks Babysitting (an in-house sitter agency that provides educational babysitters throughout the city and for both local and traveling families in your home or hotel); an indoor Exploratorium for newborns through age seven; birthday party packages; adult parenting support programs, special needs enrichment classes, and more.

I actually worked as a babysitter with their Bag of Tricks babysitting. They are very irresponsible from a business standpoint. It took them 3 months to pay me and they are EXTREMELY difficult to get ahold of. I had parents calling me for alternate numbers so they could finally get ahold of someone in the office. They often fail to give the parents any information about the babysitters they are sending to the home, and I had many parents complain directly to me for not having my phone number to contact me or even being informed of my name or level of experience. Plain and simple, they were just kind of a mess when it comes to their babysitting service.

Unfortunately, I have tried their "bag of tricks" babysitting service at $23 per hour and was very disappointed both times. The first time, I had a weird feeling as I was leaving for a job interview and returned to my apartment to find my daughter playing alone in her room while the babysitter (who had been there a total of 10 minutes) sitting on my sofa watching TV and reading a novel! I was assured by management that this was very unusual and I got an apology and was asked to give them another chance. My husband and I went to dinner recently and when we returned my very verbal potty training 3 -year old seemed relieved to see us. She said the sitter got very angry with her for peeing in her panties and scolded her as she made her clean up her urine from the floor. Her eyes were puffy red from crying so much. Be careful with these people.

My daughter attended the little explorers camp last summer - for 3's and 4's - and I couldn't have been happier. Intelligent, funny, caring and gentle staff, freshly-made organic lunches, air-conditioning (it's important at 95 degrees!) and the high staff-to-camper ratio. I will be signing her up for this year's camp for 5yrs and up.

NYC Explorers is a great space for children to play in and their Bag of Tricks babysitting service is amazing. With just one phone call a qulified,college educated, CPR certified, babysitter comes to your house with a Bag of Tricks(fun educational toys games and crafts). I honestly cannot say enough good things about this spot. It is a parents dream.

NYC Explorers has been a great boon to us and our neighborhood. We bring our kids here on cold, hot or rainy days -- or just when we want a friendly place to hang out. The owners are warm and welcoming, the space is bright and airy, and it's almost too good to be true -- you can drop your kids off with one of their babysitters then run errands! Or even better -- pop over to the spa across the street! This place has made our life with kids easier.
