about NY Film Academy High School:

Making films on the back lot of a major Hollywood studio can represent the culmination of a lifetime of struggle. Aspiring filmmakers have begged, snuck, or bribed their way past the gates, usually to no avail. To study and make films at Universal Studios, the largest back lot in the world would be a pipe dream for most; unattainable, that is, up until now. The New York Film Academy opens the studio's doors to the filmmakers-to-be of the world. Rather than being on the outside of the gates, peering in like tourists, students will live and breathe filmmaking within the very heart of the action. Only the most serious high school students should apply to this special site. High School Programs offered at Universal Studios

From the very first day of class, the focus of the workshop is to learn through making films. Each student writes, produces, directs, and edits his or her own films, and rotates among crew positions when his or her classmates shoot. Students in the Acting for Film Workshop and Animation Workshop should expect to enjoy a similarly comprehensive program. In the Four-Week Filmmaking Workshop, each student will make three film projects of increasing difficulty, culminating in a film of up to four minutes. Six-Week Filmmaking Workshop students will make four films of increasing difficulty. The final film will be up to six minutes. All programs have full-time daily schedules every week. The filmmaking program is comprised of morning or afternoon workshops, hands-on exercises in shooting and lighting, film screenings, lectures, and special activities. In addition, students shoot and edit approximately a film per person each week. Students use Arriflex-S cameras, Lowel portable lighting packages, and Steenbeck editing machines. Films are shot on 16mm film. All equipment, editing, class supplies, and film and processing costs are included in the NYFA workshop fee. Universal Studio's exclusive prop and costume collection, so expansive that it regularly supplies the largest Hollywood blockbusters, is available for workshop attendees at a special student rate. At the end of the course, students will have a final screening open to actors, friends, and family. They will receive a diploma and the 16mm originals of their work. Housing: The Academy has made arrangements with Oakwood Apartments, located across the street from the lot. Students living in the complex can enjoy the use of two pools, six tennis courts and a gym, as well as bi-monthly maid service. Students are not required to reside on campus in order to attend the workshop. To help ensure student safety, commuting students must provide a letter from a parent or legal guardian, granting permission to come and go to campus. Housing and food are not included in the tuition price. Transportation: NYFA staff will meet students by request at the Los Angeles International Airport. Students are also free to make their way to the campus by car. No previous filmmaking experience is required. The Academy encourages enrollment of students from all backgrounds and all parts of the world. Note: With the exception of field trips and other supervised excursions, students will not be allowed to leave campus without prior written permission from a parent or legal guardian.
