The Oakland Museum of California specializes in forging an understanding of California's environment, history, art, and people. Permanent exhibits on three floors portray California's natural wonders, events, eras, people who have shaped the state, and the art that Californians have produced since artist-explorers first ventured into the Yosemite Valley.
The Museum opened in 1969 and was immediately recognized as one of the more architecturally sophisticated museums in the Bay Area, with its three-tiered blend of spacious galleries, terraces, patios, sculpture gardens, and ponds. It offers a cafe and museum store, with many California titles as well as gifts, children's books and educational toys, and decorative items.
Classes & Family Programs: School tours and programs are offered in California art, history, and natural sciences. A variety of educational opportunities are available both at the museum and in the classroom. For an in-depth description of all available resources, call the Education Office at 510.238.3818.
The museum renovations are slated January, 2008 - May 2009, but the museum remains open for exhibitions, tours, public programs, annual festivals, and other public programs.
