Oakland Steiner School provides preschool through eighth-grade instruction steeped in Waldorf philosophy.
Based on the philosophies of Austrian philosopher and educator Rudolph Steiner, Waldorf education strives to educate the whole child and encourages hands-on, gentle learning.
Teachers use art and imagination in their approach to all the subjects, and every classroom has been decorated to create a calm and nurturing environment. Primitive toys made of natural materials are the norm here, and there is not a computer or television to be seen in the lower grades.
Four-week and eight-week parent-and-child classes are offered for families with children ages four and under. The four-week class costs $80 and the eight-week $160.
One of four Waldorf schools in southeastern Michigan, Oakland Steiner was founded in 1989 and is housed in the historic Stiles Elementary School building.
