The largest expanse of beach in San Francisco, Ocean Beach has great windswept dunes that give you a sense of what the natural coastline of the Western part of San Francisco looked like prior to its development.
The beach stretches a full four miles, making it ideal for running and walking. You'll want to keep moving, though. The wind and cold makes the prospect of sunbathing pretty unappealing. Swimming is extremely dangerous here and people drown every year due to the fierce riptide. Even wading is a little dicey.
All in all, not a great beach for you and the kids. This is really surfer territory.
tips:
A paved pathway, fun for bikers and inline skaters, runs parallel to the beach on the other side of the Great Highway. And check out the Cliff House, just a stone's throw away.
