The Ocean Institute is an educational facility specializing in innovative marine and social science programs. Though not strictly speaking a museum or an aquarium, the facility does house a collection of artifacts and animals. Its primary focus is educational programs, which are available to school groups five days a week.
The facility opens its doors to the public on weekends for a peek into how ocean science, history, and literature are used to inspire life-long learners. Public programs include tall shop sails, sea explorer cruises, lectures, and art programs.
Summer and school break camps are popular here, as are occasional family overnights and birthday parties.
Natural tide pools are located behind the facility and are open to the public without an admission fee. The area is a protected site.
