Encompassing the ground where Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building once stood, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was built to honor the victims, survivors, and individuals who were forever changed by the 1995 bombing of the building.
The Outside Symbolic Memorial is highlighted by two monumental Gates of Time, which serve as entrances to the Memorial site. A poignant Children's Area includes a wall of hand-painted tiles created by kids in 1995 and a series of chalkboards where children can continue to share their feelings today.
The museum takes visitors on a chronological, self-guided tour through the story of the bombing - one of the largest terrorist attacks on American soil - and the days, weeks, months, and years that followed. The museum provides vital understanding to what happened in Oklahoma City, but it may be too much for young children as emphasis is placed on the children who died that day. Special exhibits are also featured on a regular basis.
