And Up
about Old North Church:
"One if by land - two if by sea!" If that phrase means anything to you, you have to go to the Old North Church, the oldest church in Boston (1723) and a stop along the Freedom Trail.
The 191-foot steeple is not original, having been twice blown away by hurricanes in 1804 and 1953. It has, however, been faithfully restored. So much so that some say Paul Revere would recognize it today.
Paul might even recall the days when he was a bellringer for the church. Today, the eight bells in the steeple are rung each Sunday at 12:15pm and lanterns are hung from the steeple on the eve of the third Monday in April every year in honor of his ride.
Ten-minute talks by docents are given periodically throughout the day. Families can grab a pew box, settle in, and learn about the the lantern lighting, "stolen" treasures, and other historical facts.
Services: The Old North Church is, of course, a church, too. Episcopal services are held every Sunday at 9am and 11am. Everyone is welcome.
