Old Town is a San Diego tourist stop, but even residents will find there are a few interesting things for kids to do here. Old Town State Historic Park is a cluster of buildings - most restored or rebuilt from their original foundations - from the wild west period of the 1800's. Among them are a few old residences, storefronts, a carriage house, hotels, a blacksmith, and an old schoolhouse. Free tours of historic Old Town leave from the Ranger station every day at 2pm.
The purportedly haunted Whaley House offers an interesting tour. There is nothing inherently scary about the house, but docents spin good tales about the four resident ghosts - enough to keep the average six-year-old awake at night.
Plaza del Pasado, at the northern edge of Old Town, is a plaza meant to evoke a Mexican town square of the 1800's. Brimming with ceramic tiles, brightly colored fabric, mariachi music and the occasional dancer, it's fun, but really just a glorified mall. Children may get a little frustrated here.
