About Orchard Beach

The only beach in the Bronx, this 115-acre sprawl fronting the Long Island Sound, in Pelham Bay Park, features a 13-section sandy beach, a hexagonal-block promenade, a central pavilion with food stores and specialty shops, two playgrounds, two picnic areas, a large parking lot, and 26 courts for basketball, volleyball, and handball.

Changing areas and showers are available.

A nature center in the park is open from 10am-4pm; call in advance.

Getting There

By car: From the south: take I-95 (Bruckner Expressway) North. Get off at Exit 8B (Orchard Beach/City Island). Go pass the war memorial, over the Pelham bridge, and make the first right at the traffic light immediately following the drawbridge (taking the yield sign)to City Island Road. Continue to the traffic circle; follow it three quarters of the way around, following the signs for Orchard Beach.

i've been going to orchard beach for 42 years i was two yearsold my whole family moved to puerto rico and i'm the only one here and still going to my beach i'm just can't waiting for this year i go every saturday depending on the weather.It brings lost of memories my mom always took me to pelham or orchard but she passed on 33 years ago so it's in the blood loving the bronx lised alicea lovelace.

I grew up going to Orchard Beach every Sunday with my family and those are some of the best memories from my childhood. As an adult, I still love going to Orachard Beach and look forward to taking my family there one day. It's a great place to visit all year round.

I've been living in the Bronx for most of my 36-year life. Trust me when I say Orchard Beach is not a beach you want to go swimming in. I would rather take a 2-hour train ride to Jones beach or long beach or any other beach instead of Orchard Beach. This beach is a dumping ground for garbage, seriously.

As a transplant now living in the Bronx, there are times when I miss being able to walk out the back door and sunbathe or simply sit and enjoy a cup of coffee etc. I had been to City Island with my future husband and saw the sign for Orchard Beach. Today was an absolutely beautiful day, so I packed up my needlework, grabbed a sweet tea from Mickey D's and took the 7 minute trip from Southern Blvd to Orchard Beach. I'm sure once the weather changes it will be packed, but for a Monday afternoon (after school) it was absolutely peaceful. I enjoyed the breeze off the water, the trees and the general buzz of the beach. I am truly not missing the Jersey Shore oh so much anymore :) I've now found a hidden jewel and new place for me to hide when I need to have some downtime. As a mother of 4, I'm sure we'll end up there with the kids several times this coming season.

I had someone visit me from St.Martin which has 35 beautiful beaches, & she loved Orchard Beach, saying the people were so nice & the beach was exciting with the sports, basketball, handball, & music activities. She really enjoyed herself.

I first met my future husband two Summers ago at Orchard Beach when I was there with my family.We met near the music stage on a Sunday where they have salsa concerts. Today we are still regulars. We love Sundays at Orchard Beach!

The best of my childhood memories involve Orchard Beach. Our family packed up the car every saturday in the summer and headed out to Orchard Beach (with 10 kids it was a little difficult to find many inexpensive ways for entertaining). Today the beach is much cleaner and even more beautiful than I remember. As another reviewer put it... an oasis in the city.

My father took all of us (my seven brothers and sisters) to Orchard Beach countless times in the summer. He took numerous pictures which he then brought to work and described this great vacation place he found for his family. Showing the great photos got every ones interest no one believed him when he told them his hidden gem was, in fact, in the Bronx.
