about Orchard Beach:

The only beach in the Bronx, this 115-acre sprawl fronting the Long Island Sound, in Pelham Bay Park, features a 13-section sandy beach, a hexagonal-block promenade, a central pavilion with food stores and specialty shops, two playgrounds, two picnic areas, a large parking lot, and 26 courts for basketball, volleyball, and handball.

Changing areas and showers are available.

A nature center in the park is open from 10am-4pm; call in advance.

tips:

Beaches open Saturday, May 24, 2008 and lifeguards are on duty from 10am to 6pm until Labor Day.

getting there:

By car: From the south: take I-95 (Bruckner Expressway) North. Get off at Exit 8B (Orchard Beach/City Island). Go pass the war memorial, over the Pelham bridge, and make the first right at the traffic light immediately following the drawbridge (taking the yield sign)to City Island Road. Continue to the traffic circle; follow it three quarters of the way around, following the signs for Orchard Beach.
