The
Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the five largest - and one of the most highly regarded - ballet companies in the United States. Founded in 1972,
PNB was under the artistic direction of Francia Russell and Kent Stowell from 1977-2005.The current artistic director is Peter Boal. In June 2003, the company became residents of the city's new
Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.
The ballet company's season lasts from September through June; the company presents full-length and mixed repertory ballets at home and on tour. During the holidays, the company presents a wildly popular
Nutcracker, with choreography by Stowell and sets and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak. See our
calendar for show information.
Kids are always welcome at
Pacific Northwest Ballet performances, but some pieces are more family-friendly than others. Everyone who attends must purchase a seat. Booster seats are also available for free prior to performances; binoculars are available for a nominal fee. If you come with children, remember that no late seating is allowed and disruptive kids are asked to leave the hall; however, monitors are available outside for viewing if you have to step away. Children can also become involved on the performance side of the ballet at the
Pacific Northwest Ballet School.
