Pasadena Public Library - Central Branch is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a delight to behold for its architectural merit, let alone its impressive collection of books.
The sunny central patio is anchored by a water fountain and tropical plants; to its east is a coffee stand and
library store. Throughout the main circulation-desk hall, sizable antique chandeliers hang along exposed wooden beams.
The outstanding
children's library is as large as some branch libraries. It has a thorough picture book section, numerous youth periodicals, children's DVDs and VHS tapes in circulation, and an impressive non-fiction collection.
The children's library is divided into two rooms, creating several quiet study areas. A charming
story room - complete with plush theatrical curtains and tiered, carpeted steps - is loved by all children who have settled down for a story from Ms. Angela or Ms. Beverly.
The infant and toddler
storytimes are hugely popular for the energy of the staff storytellers and the songs, dances, and short films that take place each week. Unlike at other libraries, Pasadena storytimes
require advanced registration, and parents line up early on registration days. Four sessions are typically held each year, and Pasadena residents are given priority. Check the
website for more details.
The
Central Branch is also home to the
Technology Learning Center, which provides ten public-access computers. The multimedia workstations provide access to encyclopedias and other educational software.
