about Penitentiary Glen Reservation:

A gorgeous, great big green space in Lake County, Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen Reservation offers a few surprises, both natural and otherwise.

Inside the Nature Center and Wildlife Center (open daily, 9am-5pm) interactive exhibits and displays offer lots to see and do - including the award-winning Window on Wildlife. Outside, more than seven miles of hiking trails, including stroller- and wheelchair-accessible and cross-country ski trails, lead visitors past several butterfly gardens and Ohio field habitats. A bridle trail is also nestled inside Penitentiary Glen Reservation, and a portion of the Buckeye Trail runs through the park.

Picnic areas with grills and a sheltered picnic pavilion make good casual dining spots.

A ride on the miniature steam train is a spring and summer time treat. Operated by the Lake Shore Steamers, visitors can ride on top of the tiny train cars to the gorge overlook and back. (The ride takes about 15 minutes. It's popular, so expect to wait in line a bit on nice days.)

tips:

Plan a visit when the Lake Shore Live Steamers train is running. The short ride around the track is a fun way for little ones to see the gorge.

getting there:

From I-90, take Route 306 south one mile to the light at Route 615. Turn left onto Route 615 and right at the next light onto Kirtland-Chardon Road. Look for the park on the right about two miles ahead.
