The Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center, owned and operated by The Hamburg Natural History Society, was founded to protect and promote education about our natural resources.
The Penn Dixie Site, a former quarry, is home to Devonian era fossils over 380 million years old that were formed in what was once a tropical sea. Visitors can dig into the shale at the northern end of the site, using a small digging tool and pail, to uncover fossils. Tour guides are on hand to answer any questions and provide assistance.
Penn Dixie also hosts astronomy programs, nature and bird walks, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, a kids' summer camp program, fossil-digging birthday parties, and more.
