The beautiful Southwestern landscape with its never-ending open space can be appreciated as the steps of Spanish and Native ancestors are retraced at this sacred and awe-inspiring national park, the
winner of our 2008
Parents' Picks quest to find the
Best Enviro-friendly Place in Albuquerque. Managed by the National Park Service and the city of Albuquerque, over 25,000
petroglyphs (images carved into rock), five
volcanic cones, and hundreds of
archeological sights are protected at the
Petroglyph National Monument. The
Las Imagenes Visitor Center is located at the Rinconada Canyon entrance. The park can also be entered via Boca Negra Canyon. Children in grades K-6 can learn more about
Petroglyph National Monument by completing the
Junior Ranger booklet. Children show their completed booklet to a park ranger and are presented with a Junior Ranger Badge and certificate. The interactive booklet can be found in the kids' section of the monument's website. The park is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
