Located in downtown Atlanta,
Piedmont Park is the urban hub for those who enjoy outdoor activites. Playgrounds, paved paths, and open fields occupy 185 acres and make it a terrific family stop during a visit to downtown. Water fountains are available, but no concessions are offered within the park. The park contains soccer and softball fields, a
public swimming pool and tennis courts, and lots of places to bike, roller blade, and board. The fact that it's closed to traffic makes it an exceptionally good spot for kids to learn how to manage wheeled toys. Don't miss the
Playscape, created by sculptor Isamu Noguchi. The ladders and slides are irresistible. In 2007, the
Mayor's Grove boundless playground opened. Both play areas are very popular and well-designed. In 2006, the Park opened re-opened the Historic Active Oval and Ball Fields. The $1.8 million restoration project included adding two softball fields, two soccer fields, regulation size sand volley ball courts, a running track, new drinking fountains, benches, and a shade pergola for viewing the games. The Piedmont Park Conservancy, the nonprofit member and donor funded organization that manages the Park hosts Saturday Safari events May through September, and the science and nature workshops are very popular. Check our
calendar for dates and register in advance. During summer, the park offers an outstanding
day camp, which tends to fill quickly. A
Green Market, hosted by Piedmont Park Conservancy and the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs, City of Atlanta, is open seasonally on Saturdays. Use the 12th Street & Piedmont Avenue entrance. Restaurants are located on streets surrounding the park. Picnic here, and make a point of going next door to the
Atlanta Botanical Gardens while you're in the area.
