The 1,100-acre Plains Conservation Center features "prairie originals" - that is, animals such as pronghorn, prairie dogs, coyotes, burrowing owls, meadowlarks, and red-tailed hawks. A closer look reveals curly leaves of a buffalo grass jungle, tracks and traces left by passing wildlife, or the bright orange face of cowboy's delight in bloom.
Visitors can discover how the physical aspects and limited resources of the prairie shaped the lives of two very different cultures. Replica tipis, artifacts, and a fire ring speak of the semi-nomadic lifestyle of the Cheyenne people of the 1830s. Well's Crossing, a replica of an 1887 sod village, offers all the pioneer comforts: two homesteads, a school house, a blacksmith shop, an heirloom garden and a chicken coop.
Plan your visit around a guided walk, wagon ride, program, or special event. The PCC offers fun and interactive programs for all ages and ability levels; camps are held during summer.
