About Precita Eyes Mural Center
Big, colorful murals pulse throughout the Mission District and discovering one around a bend is one of the joys of walking there. The best known is the group in little Balmy Alley (24th St. between Harrison and Treat Streets). The oldest were painted in the early 1970s and new ones are being added all the time, thanks to the support of artists at the Precita Eyes Mural Center. The themes are varied, and some are political, with the emphasis on Latino pride.
Self-Guided Tour: To get a fuller picture of the history and meaning behind the murals, you can take a self-guided walking tour organized by Precita Eyes. The center sells a map ($1.50) that helps you find every mural in the Mission District on your own.
Guided Tour: Tours are offered seven days a week and are led by an experienced muralist. During the week they offer private tours for groups or individuals by reservation only. They can be adjusted for any age group. Visitors can also join one of two public guided tours held every Saturday and Sunday. Please check the website for times and details. Bike tours are also available.
The Center offers many classes for children and youth of all ages, including Toddler Art, Kids Art, Kids Mural Workshop, and the Urban Youth Arts Program. Check the website for the schedule and details.
Kids Art Summer Camps include painting; printmaking; and crafts such as paper mache, book making, puppet making, even creating monsters!
Classes take place at the studio, located at 348 Precita Avenue. The phone there is 415.285.2311.

Tips
A mural-splashed playground lies just down the street from the Center, as do many fine taquerias. When you get home - if you've still got the energy - pull out a piece of the biggest paper you can find, grab some markers, and see if your kids can create their own colorful statement.
Getting There
Main Location is on 24th Street between Harrison and Alabama. The studio is on Precita Avenue between Folsom Street and Treat Street. Precita Avenue parallels Cesar Chavez.
