Deadline for applications: Early January
Presidio Hill is a co-educational, K-8 school with an enrollment of approximately 200 students. Grades K-5 have one section per grade, averaging 16-18 students per section. Grades 6-8 consist of two sections with a total of 28-30 children per grade. In addition to a one-year kindergarten, the school offers the option of a two-year kindergarten program to serve younger five-year-olds born in the late summer and early fall.

Founded in 1918 by two artists who sought a creative, active learning environment for their children, Presidio Hill School is the oldest continually-operating progressive school in California. The school is committed to multiculturalism and the development of its students into active and responsible participants in the world.

The small size of the school encourages close involvement among teachers, students, and parents, and promotes a strong sense of community.

Presidio Hill's educational program can best be described as uniform in philosophy and diverse in method. Academic standards provide consistent curricular strands across the grades, with the shared goal of fostering creative, independent thinkers through hands-on, integrated, and active child-centered learning experiences. Individual teachers are given considerable latitude to use their own professional judgment in choosing teaching strategies and tactics that best fit the curricular goals and learning profiles of a given class.

Every subject area includes projects, field trips, co- and cross-curricular activities, and interactions among various grade levels.

Core values are used as an ethical base from which limits and consequences are set and community or individual problems solved. Teachers are clear with students about what values the community holds dear and work toward maintaining them in all activities. Parents model effective community involvement as dedicated volunteers at the school - in classrooms, on field trips, on the Board of Trustees, and on committees.
