Presidio Park551

in San Diego, CA 92110

about Presidio Park:

The site of the first Spanish settlement on the west coast, the location of the Presidio offers views of the entire Mission Valley all the way up the coast along Interstate 5. This large, partly forested park contains a recreation center, a public golf course, and picnic areas suitable for big family gatherings.

On this site was the first of California's 21 Missions, built in 1769. The settlement was relocated to its current site at Mission de Acala after it was destroyed by fire. Archeologists are still trying to excavate the remains of the original Mission at the top of the hill; artifacts are on display at the Junipero Serra Museum.

tips:

Take note of the bell at the bottom of the hill near the Park's entrance: It marks the beginning of El Camino Real, the road traveled by missionaries and Native Americans up California's coast. Missions were established at intervals equal to a day's ride on horseback. The next mission is San Luis Rey near Carlsbad.
