Raccoon River Park covers more than 600 acres. The centerpiece of the park is the 232-acre Blue Heron Lake, which offers opportunities for fishing and boating, and is ringed by a crushed-rock nature trail suitable for walking and biking.
A 700-foot beach is open all summer for public swimming, though no lifeguards are on duty. The large, innovative playground overlooking the lake features a sailing ship and seasonal water features.
The park also boasts softball and soccer complexes, and rentable picnic shelters.
Naturalists at the Nature Lodge, located along the northwest shore of Blue Heron Lake, lead educational and recreational activities throughout the year.
Parties: Two-hour themed parties are available at the nature center for ages four to 10, and include cake, ice cream, tableware, set-up and clean-up, and hosted activities. Cost: $90 for up to 10 children; $5 each additional child, to a maximum of 15. Call 515.222.3424 to book.
