Observing the two year olds at play, I was shocked it took 45 minutes for a fight over a toy to break out. When it did finally happen, the teacher came over and restated each child's position ("I see you really want to play with this toy, and I see you had it in your hand and already had a game with it"). She then asked the children what they wanted to do about it, and my jaw hit the floor as they started listing off options ("She could wait until I'm done with this, I could play with this other toy, we could find a way to play with it together, etc"). The boy who had the toy eventually decided to give it up, and play with an identical toy from the shelf. The girl who tried to take the toy began to walk off, and the teacher asked her if she was okay with this solution. "Yes, but I just want to be alone for a while" she said. I knew I wanted that kind of problem solving and social skills for my child, so I was hooked.
