If it's true what they say about real estate - "Location, location, location!" - then
Rice Park, a lovely but postage stamp-sized park with a large fountain and
Peanuts character sculptures, is hard to top.
Visitors can take in the park's greenery - or whitery, we suppose, depending on the season - on a trip to its attraction-heavy corner of downtown. The park alone is
flanked by four impressive institutions: the
Landmark Center to the north, the venerable St. Paul Hotel to the east, the
Saint Paul Central Library to the south, and the
Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to the west. Buy snacks in the main floor cafes at the Landmark Center or library, or pack a picnic.
The park is the site of free activities and entertainment during the
Flint Hills Children's Festival each year in late spring, and gets adorned with lights, decorations, and
the city's "official" Christmas tree in winter. Until 2007, it also hosted ice sculpture contests and events during Winter Carnival.
