We love this park for its out-of-the-way location (for Seattleites, at least) and spectacular views of Puget Sound. The park's entry lies at the top of a steep drop-off, and gnarled madronas, scrubby pines, and hills covered in dry yellow grasses give it a distinctly Southern California feel.
Short view trails can be accessed from the uppermost parking lot (on the left when you drive in), and a number of picnic tables are located near the park's entrance; they sit right by the road, but boast a dizzying view. A picnic pavilion and tables have been built halfway down the hill on a terrace that also looks out over Puget Sound. A children's playground - aging but structurally safe - is located on the other side of the terrace. The playground has one of the best views in town: if you visit on a clear day, make sure to bring your camera. You'll get great shots of your kids on the playground equipment, framed by sky, water, and trees.
From the lower parking lot, follow the path down to the beach; if you're a birder, check out the wooded area next to the railroad tracks for American Goldfinch and other songbirds. The beach path is stroller-accessible all the way to the sand. The beach itself is pebbly and strewn with driftwood and rusting industrial castoffs - it's a good place for imaginative games. Another picnic shelter is located on the beach; and bathrooms are situated at the lower parking lot and the beach.
Call the number listed to make shelter reservations. Reservations are accepted for use in Apr-Sep, 9am-dusk.
