This (relatively) new facility, attached to
The American Museum of Natural History houses
The Hayden Planetarium, a must-see experience for young and old alike. In the top half of the Hayden Sphere, the Space Theater uses advanced visual technology (including a customized, one-of-a-kind Zeiss Star Projector) to create shows designed to completely wow you and yours.
The bottom half of the Hayden Sphere houses the
Big Bang exhibit, where visitors are transported to the beginning of time and space, experiencing a dramatic, multisensory re-creation of the first moments of the universe. There are often crowds around the "bowl," and children may have to jostle a bit for a front position so they can see. From here, visitors can walk down the nautilistic path that chronicles the evolution of the universe - a sloping walkway that takes them through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution.
The real show, though, is in the
Planetarium proper.
Cosmic Collisions, voiced by Robert Redford, takes space enthusiasts on a trip through time, examining how the violent impact of asteroids and space debris have changed and continue to change the universe. Shows are every half hour, beginning at the museum's opening time; the first space show ticket is for 10:30am. Buy advance tickets by phone at 212.769.5200.
