this was a great place to skate and it's currently a testament to how shitty the city is becoming. Granted the ice has never been that great here(what can you expect for free) it was especially terrible the last few times i have gone. Im not sure if the workers there are fresh out of jail, and in a halfway program or what but they are all punks that stand around and do nothing. There were grooves 3 inches deep in the ice and i dont think you could have made the ice worse if you took an ice pick to it. I politely asked when the ice would be resurfaced and they said 5 mins, while a group of 6 of them sat on their asses with their thumbs up their asses watching everyone fall all over the ice. After 30 mins elapsed, my gf went over to ask again how long and they said 5 mins. She brought up how they had said 5 mins before hand and its been thirty, and they started giving her attitude because they had to get off their asses and earn their paycheck. There was 3 ladies around the age of 60-70 falling all over because of the poor conditions and common courtesy never came into play. As soon as more people started showing up and bitching to the workers, along with me fuming they finally started to resurface the ice, but refused to throw down water, as they basically just drove the zamboni around like jackasses accomplishing nothing. If they rehire new workers, or you dont mind putting in your two cents its a great place to bring the kids, but if you want to avoid confrontation, find a rink and pay the money, because the employees suck and in turn the ice sucks
This is a really great place to take a bunch of kids and spend the afternoon. Its reasonably priced, both if you need skates and for snacks. Its also a great place for those of us who don't skate to sit and "people watch". Hope all those who visit have a great time!!!
You just have to be careful sometimes with the crazy teenagers but it's definitely one of the gems still shining in downtown buffalo. And you can take the subway right there, which is convenient for those in the Norther Suburbs. Just park at University Plaza and take it to Fountain Plaza.
I grew up in Niagara Falls and when I was a teen we had a outdoor rink. I remember all the great memories with my boyfriend and friends. He is now husband and we try to go to fontain plaza at least 2-3 times a month. We enjoy it so much. We are now in our 40's and yes can still skate...LOL...I Hope Buffalo never closes the rink because I hope someday you too will have great memories.
This is a small rink which has a tendency to get crowded on Friday nights especially with teenagers. They have snacks and plenty of hot drinks!!! They have plenty of skates for rent, and maintain the ice regularly.
