about Rustic Canyon Park:

This idyllic park is actually a hive of activity.

Tennis lessons are available for $80/eight weekly sessions. The six courts are also open to the public during the day, on a first-come, first-served basis. These courts are not lit and cannot be rented; they're purely recreational.

Rustic Canyon's indoor gymnasium has scheduled basketball and volleyball games during the week, but is free for public use on weekends. The baseball field must be reserved by the hour; call the park office.

Recreational swimming, and/or swimming lessons are available in the public pool during the summer months.

The recreation center offers year-round classes in ceramics, ballet and jewelry-making. Children's classes include ballet, piano, art, and Fairytale Theater.

The excellent Pre-School Fun class is a five-day preschool with a full pre-K curriculum. The price is about half that of any other preschool in the area, and the small class size allows the wonderful lead teacher, Carla Lemus, to give plenty of personal attention. Call for information about schedules and registration.

The playground has a large sandlot, swings, and a medium-sized climbing structure entertaining to kids of all ages. Several impressive, protected sycamores surround the area; visitors are asked to enjoy them without climbing.

Camps are very affordable at Rustic Canyon Park and run all summer as well as winter and spring school breaks. The shady, peaceful setting and the caring and enthusiastic staff make these camps fill up fast every year, so apply early!

The many picnic tables and barbecues make great birthday party spots. Reservations are needed for groups larger than 20.

Restrooms are located near the picnic area as well as in the recreation center.

Dogs must be kept on leashes.

tips:

Most of the park is nice and shady, so it's a winner on hot, sunny days. The tennis courts, however, are not so shady; sun-hats and block are definitely in order.

getting there:

Latimer Road is accessible either by heading up Mesa from West Channel Drive, or by heading down from Sunset on Brooktree and winding through the residential neighborhood. Either way, it's a good idea to take a look at a map before heading out, as even people in the neighborhood sometimes get confused trying to give directions.
