The
San Diego Junior Theatre originated in 1948 and is one of the oldest children's theatre organizations in the United States. Classes are offered at
three locations. Its mission continues to be to provide the community with quality arts education for children.
The Junior Theatre offers
classes in acting, voice, dance, and specialty topics, including Shakespeare, clowning, accents and dialects, and stage make-up. Students range from beginners to advanced, ages three to 18.
Classes are one or two times per week in a ten-week session during the fall, winter, and spring. During the summer, the Junior Theatre offers its
Theatre In The Park program that consists of two week sessions of full-day classes, concentrating on a variety of theater disciplines.
The Junior Theater produces six mainstage and three black box productions per year featuring its students. Mainstage productions are held in the
Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park and black box productions are held at the Chula Vista Theatre at 250 Third Avenue, Chula Vista. Additional classes and performances are held at the
La Jolla YMCA Firehouse, located at the corner of Wall Street and Herschel Avenue in La Jolla.
