The
San Diego Museum of Man is all about the experience of humankind from an anthropological and archaeological viewpoint.
The
Children's Discovery Center is an interactive area where families can learn about Ancient Egypt by bartering in a market complete with simulated vegetables, fish and bread, by dressing up the Royal Cat, Bastet, or by playing a game of Senet. They can sit in a royal throne in the tomb of an imaginary princess, or "Write a Message to the Mummy." The activities are hands-on, and accessible for all ages and abilities. Another hands-on experience is the 7,000 square foot
Footsteps Through Time exhibit funded by the National Science Foundation. Visitors can compare primate and hominid skulls and bones, search a "Toolbox" for ancient arrowheads, dig for fossils in a simulated excavation, and see a replica of the largest primate that ever lived.
The museum also promotes cultural awareness through family-friendly events such as its annual Indian Fair and its participation in December Nights with a tribute to the Swedish Community.
Summer camps offer half-day adventures including Monkey'n Around, Bone Detective, and Egyptian Adventure for kids in grades 1-4. For additional information, visit the
museum's website.
