The San Diego Natural History Museum, dedicated to interpreting and protecting the natural world (especially in the region of Southern California and Baja California), offers lots of hands-on opportunities and fascinating exhibits for kids. Its lay-out is easy to navigate, and we found the amount of things to see and do just perfect for a two- or three-hour visit.
SDNHM is a highly-respected, active research institution - one of the oldest in the nation - and offers a wide-range of fascinating local- and global-themed exhibitions and IMAX films.
Children will particularly enjoy Fossil Mysteries, an exhibition that provides fascinating insights into how paleotologists solve the mysteries of the past. Specimen are from the Southern California and Baja California regions. There are also large-sized dino replicas for kids to ogle and touch, and special scopes to spot pre-historic animals nearly hidden in authentic-looking eco-system displays.
Educational programs include off-site family field trips through local nature reserves with museum staff, and Wacky Science Sundays every Sunday at 12:15pm and 2:15pm, hosted by Ms. Frizzle on her Magic School Bus. Check the Museum's website for the latest program information.
The Museum offers a wide variety of spring and summer camps for kids. The only problem is deciding which to attend!
