about San Francisco Children's Art Center:

Open to children from 27 months to 12 years of age, creative art classes for children ages two to ten are offered in student guided studio environment with a wide array of materials. Groups are kept small and parents rave about the way this program "really encourages creativity."

The classes follow an organized open studio format and introduce the children to a wide array of media: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, collage, clay, and photography.

Enrollment is ongoing, so the cost of a session is prorated if classes have already begun. Drop-in classes are available for $20 to $28 each. Sessions generally run ten-13 weeks for one to two hours weekly, depending on child's age.

In addition to regular weekly classes, the center offers Big Kid Weekly Workshops during the summer, for ages 5-1/2 to 12 years. Depending on age, classes run from either three or four hours long, Monday through Thursday, and include such topics as Photography Mixed Media, Architectural Sculpture, Clay Time, and Art in the Garden.

Parties: You can hold a birthday at the studio on Sundays. A basic package includes two hours of studio time (1-1/2 hours for $200) with two teachers, art supplies, artwork to take home, and a certificate for a free art class all at a cost of $225 for up to 10 children, and $10 for each additional child. For parties of 15 to 20 children, the fee is $275-$300.

tips:

The drop-in classes are a great option once your child is familiar with the studio, or to just try out the Art Center's classes. These run up to two hours long, and parents aren't required to stay (drop off is actually encouraged but parents can wait in a screened off area in the studio on a comfy couch if desired). It's best to phone first and let the Center know in advance that you're coming (they will accommodate walk-ins if they can, but advance notice preferred! A lot of folks we know make dropping in on Saturday mornings a habit. The Marina Safeway is located across the street, so you can shop (child-free) while your little one is having fun.
