About San Francisco Main Library

The library is one of the most technologically advanced in the country, starting with the talking elevators, which call out helpful information like "going up," and "second floor." You'll want to get out on the second floor, incidentally, because that's where the Fisher Children's Center is located. At the Center, kids can work on the computers, read stories, or play video games. There are lots of desks and places to sit. On Saturdays preschoolers are invited to a story reading (11am-11:30am). Next door is another room where kids can watch movies, or do crafts or some other scheduled activity. On the sixth floor, kids can explore the roof garden and terrace. Special Events: The library offers a special workshop or class once a week. Check the website or our calendar for listings.

Tips

Pick up a monthly events schedule or check out the web site to take advantage of the countless free programs offered for kids, from magic tricks to hip-hop dancing.

Getting There

Cross street is Grove. Take BART or Muni to the Civic Center station. Park in the Civic Center Plaza garage.
