The 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan carousel is completely hand carved and situated in the Loof Hippodrome building on the Santa Monica Pier. The building dates back to 1916 and is a National Historic Landmark.
As of summer 2010, the Carousel has a full-service, old-fashioned soda fountain, with terrific ice cream, malts, and classic ice cream parlor food, served at a counter by friednly servers in white hats.
The Santa Monica Pier Carousel is very popular for children's birthday parties and may be rented out for other occasions, too. Call 310.395.4248, email carouselparties@earthlink.net, or visit the website for more info.
The 44 original hand-painted wooden horses were restored in 1990 and were featured in the movie "The Sting," with Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The carousel is open year-round; and while this is obviously a great summer day activity, it's also a lovely way to enjoy a view of the ocean on a cool or rainy winter day.

There is an all-day parking lot on Santa Monica Pier, a two-hour lot below the pier, or metered parking on the streets around the pier.
